On June 1, 2013, the third state Referee Academy event was held at California High School in San Ramon, CA. Over 150 referees from throughout California North attended the morning fitness and afternoon training session. The keynote at the event was Herb Silva, Director of Referee Identification and Training at the United States Soccer Federation.
Herb presented a customized presentation answering some of the topics discussed throughout the year at the Referee Academy events. His Points of Emphasis presentation was recorded and is available in three parts. This year’s points of emphasis included a breakdown of game management from a player/referee relationship, the role the referee plays in discipline during the game, the psychology of yellow and red cards, changing the behavior of a team or individual, and a discussion around at what point a yellow card is ineffective.
